I practice what I preach. As a teenager, I discovered the benefits of microdermabrasion and light chemical peels. I started doing them in my teens because I found they created smooth skin. Here are some other basic skincare guidelines to follow throughout your life to make your skin look fabulous at every age!
In Early Childhood
Start using sunblock. Because most children won’t understand the importance of this for many years to come, parents must be proactive by not only applying the proper sun protection but also by teaching their kids to do so at the earliest possible age.
The Teen Years
Start using a good toner and exfoliating cleanser with alpha- or beta-hydroxy acid. You don’t need to use expensive stuff either. Neutrogena has some good products, such as body wash, with beta-hydroxy acid in it. This also can help avoid large pores.
Consider microdermabrasion. Not just on the face, but also the hands, arms, and chest. This may help ward off problems later in life. Brown spots, red spots, and broken capillaries start showing up in your 30’s. And that’s when you should prevent them at their earliest, even before you start seeing them.
Consider genetic predispositions by observing your parents’ skin as well as that of older relatives. Red spots and broken capillaries tend to happen more in genetically predisposed people, primarily light-skinned individuals.
Product Recommendation: green-tea products made by Aveeno® (over-the-counter) and Replenix® (sold at doctors’ offices).
In Your 20’s & 30’s
Look for textural changes, rough spots, inability to exfoliate as well as in the past, and fine lines. Now it’s time to step it up. I recommend using a topical growth-factor serum to help the skin generate collagen and prevent future fine lines.
Product Recommendation: Products with Retinoid-containing ingredients including Remergent® (over-the-counter) and Neocutis® (sold at doctors’ offices).
Consider Botox Cosmetic® or Dysport®. This isn’t widely accepted by many consumers, but if you’re starting to see deep lines caused by muscular movement, smiling or frowning, then I don’t think it’s too early to start using these agents. A little bit of Botox Cosmetic® and/or Dysport®, well-placed, in your early 30’s can go a long way. The average person who starts using Botox Cosmetic® and/or Dysport® at the age of 40 to 45 often has to repeat it every 3 months. The average person who starts using Botox Cosmetic® and/or Dysport® at 30 or 35 often only needs to repeat it every six months.
Late 30’s & Early 40’s
Look for the first signs of lost elasticity and sagging. It’s time to consider fillers. We have nice round fat pads around our cheekbones when we are young and we start to lose that in early middle age. Studies have shown that when you have hyaluronic acid fillers injected earlier in life, it helps the skin start generating collagen and can delay the sagging later. Hyaluronic acid fillers which are FDA-approved in the United States include Juvederm xc®, Perlane-L®, Restylane L®. Sculptra® is also extremely useful when injected into areas such as the cheekbone when a larger amount of volume is needed.
Late 40’s & Beyond
Consider more invasive measures and keep up with new treatments. If you’ve been taking the above steps, by now your skin should be looking its best and it’s up to you whether to be considering more invasive measures, such as surgery. But keep in mind that new products and procedures are constantly are being developed, so that the options available to you 10 years from now likely will be greater than they are today. For example, I see more good things coming from laser treatments. I’m excited about the prospects of fractional lasers. They create microscopic lines in the skin that heal and cause a lifting of the skin. This promotes collagen growth and is already successful in erasing superficial fine lines, scars and stretch marks. In the near future, the technology which is constantly evolving, should be efficient enough to lift and even tighten a sagging eye area or neckline!
